Eurowings Returns to Karpathos with Direct Flights from Düsseldorf

Karpathos officially welcomed the return of direct Eurowings flights from Düsseldorf, marking a major milestone for tourism on the island and the return of the German market for the 2026 season.

The island of Karpathos officially welcomed the return of the German market this week with the first direct Eurowings flight arriving from Düsseldorf — a milestone moment for tourism on the island after a one-year absence of direct German connectivity.

The arrival was celebrated at Karpathos National Airport with a warm and authentic local welcome organized by the Municipality of Karpathos. Visitors stepping off the aircraft were greeted with traditional music, local treats, cultural performances, and the unmistakable hospitality that has made Karpathos one of Greece’s most authentic island destinations.

A Traditional Karpathian Welcome

The reception reflected the island’s rich cultural identity and community spirit. Members of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Karpathos participated in the event wearing traditional local attire, while musicians Michail Charokopos and Minas Sissamis performed authentic Karpathian music for arriving guests.

For many travelers, it was their very first introduction to the island — not through brochures or advertisements, but through genuine local culture and hospitality.

A Long-Term Tourism Strategy Paying Off

According to the Municipality, the return of the Düsseldorf route was not accidental. It was the result of a coordinated, multi-month effort involving local authorities, tourism professionals, regional institutions, and national tourism organizations.

The strategy included:

  • Participation in major international tourism exhibitions in London and Berlin
  • Ongoing online meetings with representatives of the German tourism market
  • Collaboration with the Greek National Tourism Organisation and its Germany office
  • A familiarization (fam) trip hosted in Karpathos for Eurowings representatives
  • A special gastronomic presentation in Frankfurt introducing German tour operators and journalists to the culture, cuisine, and identity of Karpathos

The Municipality emphasized that rebuilding strong tourism connections with Germany is a strategic priority for the island’s future.

Strong Cooperation Across the Tourism Sector

Special thanks were extended to numerous individuals and organizations that contributed to bringing the route back to Karpathos, including representatives from the Greek National Tourism Organisation, the Region of South Aegean, the Karpathos Hotel Association, local travel professionals, and the Municipality’s marketing partners.

Regional Governor George Hatzimarkos was specifically acknowledged for supporting the broader tourism development strategy for the island.

The announcement also highlighted the importance of cooperation between public institutions, local businesses, tourism professionals, and the local community in achieving sustainable tourism growth.

More German Tourism Activity Planned for 2026

The Municipality confirmed that bookings are already progressing at a promising level for this first year of cooperation with Eurowings.

Looking ahead, Karpathos is expected to host an additional fam trip later this month, welcoming 12 German tour operators accompanied by representatives of the Greek National Tourism Organisation’s Germany office.

The long-term objective is clear:

  • Increase flight frequency from Düsseldorf
  • Strengthen the island’s presence in the German tourism market
  • Continue positioning Karpathos as an authentic Greek island destination focused on culture, hospitality, and sustainable tourism

Why This Matters for Karpathos

Germany has historically been one of the most important international tourism markets for Karpathos. The return of direct air connectivity from Düsseldorf represents more than just a flight route — it signals renewed confidence in the destination and opens the door to stronger tourism growth in the years ahead.

For local businesses, hotels, restaurants, tour providers, and tourism professionals across the island, the return of German visitors provides new momentum heading into the 2026 summer season.

Most importantly, the event showcased what makes Karpathos unique: a destination where authentic culture, local traditions, and genuine hospitality remain at the heart of the visitor experience.
